Project Overview
As part of the 'Virtual Reality' course at EPFL, our team of three developed a VR infinite runner game for Meta Quest. Set in the rings of Saturn, the player dodges obstacles, uses power-ups, and interacts with various in-game mechanics like shooting, grabbing, and hovering. Designed with a focus on immersive gameplay and user comfort, the game features multiple levels, intuitive UI, and several custom interaction systems.
Challenges
- •Designing intuitive VR interactions like grabbing, shooting, and socketing in a high-speed game environment
- •Ensuring cybersickness prevention through careful locomotion and environmental design
- •Implementing a hover mechanic using body tracking and arm positioning
- •Creating responsive game mechanics (e.g., poke-based wall clearing, time stick slowdown)
- •Building a dynamic level and score system, including tutorial onboarding and feedback integration
Key Achievements
- •Successfully developed a fully playable and stable VR game for Meta Quest in Unity
- •Implemented complex XR features like laser shooting, hover mechanics, and puzzle-based wall clearing
- •Designed immersive audio-visual environments with tutorial, spaceship hub, and real-time UI
- •Incorporated user feedback into final iteration, improving gameplay pacing and clarity
- •Built a modular spawning and interaction system adaptable to future VR extensions
